The Credit Union is a valued community institution that has supported residents in one of Liverpool’s most deprived neighbourhoods. It is at the same time established and pioneering, being one of the country’s first community credit unions.
For us, the opportunity to design an extension to the office of the Park Street Credit Union was a chance to work with an organisation whose values we share, but also an opportunity to help them tell their story. The design for the extension is both respectful to the existing office building, but also bold and impactful – celebrating history, but pointing to a continuing role at the heart of community life. The blend of contemporary elements that harmonise with the proportions of the existing structure express a message of continuity and endurance. Having negotiated a challenging planning process, planners ultimately embraced the bold design approach that meets the client’s need for additional capacity, but underscores its significant and positive role within the community.
