Re-imaging terraced streets of the future

Liverpool Architects House for the community

We were delighted to be selected as a winning entry in the Liverpool Combined Authority’s competition for innovative redevelopment of terraced housing. Our proposal, House For The Community, proposes a radically re-imagined terraced street. The project is in tune with our place-making philosophy and approach and gave us a chance to design a diverse set of space to create a genuinely inclusive, inter-generational community.

Our solution envisages 8 terraced houses and a community cafe, with innovative design additions that extend and revitalise the living spaces whilst preserving the integrity of a traditional street. The design retains the existing facades, but adds contemporary design features through the addition of a second story to provide additional living space, whilst echoing the properties’ traditional pitched roofs.

Functional backyards are transformed into communal back gardens, with semi-private areas, play zones and vegetable patches. We wanted to blur the barriers between the private and public realms to reassert the essentially "social character" of the traditional street and rekindle a much-needed and valued sense of neighbourliness. The proposal also includes a suggestion to develop a neighbouring council-owned plot into a public garden, further enhancing communal amenities. House For The Community is a scalable model for the Liverpool City Region, offering a blueprint for repurposing terraced housing to meet contemporary needs.

Our winning design preserves the communal spirit of these historic streets while offering a forward-thinking solution that promises to create thriving, sustainable neighbourhoods.
